Everything Was Training

For most of my life, I thought I was moving from one chapter to another.

• Technology.
• Information and data.
• Business transformation.
• International markets.
• Entrepreneurship.
• Hospitality.
• Food.
• Art.
• Wellness.
• Human behavior.
• Coaching.
• Writing.

At times, even I wondered how all of these pieces belonged in the same life.

Today, looking backward, I understand something I couldn’t have understood while I was living it:

Every chapter was teaching me something that another chapter would eventually need.

• Technology taught me systems.
• Data taught me patterns.
• International work taught me people and perspective.
• Leadership taught me responsibility.
• Entrepreneurship taught me courage.
• Hospitality taught me connection.
• Food taught me nourishment.
• Art taught me expression.
• Wellness taught me the body.
• Coaching taught me transformation.
• And life taught me that none of them exist separately.

I couldn’t see it then.

But everything was training.

The Architect

My earliest professional world was built around information, technology, systems, structure and logic.

• I learned to solve problems.
• I learned to understand how complicated systems fit together.

And I learned something that would influence much of my career:

Information creates power when you know what to do with it.

But eventually I became interested in something beyond the information itself. I wanted to understand what it was telling us.

The Realization

• Data contains patterns.
• Patterns tell stories.
• And those stories can reveal opportunities that aren’t immediately visible.

That realization began moving me away from simply building and managing systems toward using information to make better decisions. I started thinking more strategically.

The question was no longer simply: What does the data say?

It became:

What does this allow us to understand?

The Expansion

Eventually, information became a tool for transformation.

I worked across organizations, markets and countries, helping teams solve complex problems and create systems capable of producing meaningful change.

But something else was happening.

The deeper I went into organizational transformation, the more obvious it became that systems weren’t usually the most complicated part. People were.

The Awakening

• You can create an excellent strategy.
• You can design a brilliant process.
• You can implement sophisticated technology.
• You can have all the data in the world.

And human beings can still make the outcome completely different from what you predicted.

Why? That question fascinated me.

I became increasingly interested in behavior, psychology, emotions, motivation, resistance, identity and patterns.

My focus slowly shifted.

And that changed everything.

The Integration

Eventually my curiosity moved deeper still.

• The mind wasn’t separate from the body.
• Behavior wasn’t separate from physiology.
• Food wasn’t separate from mood.
• Stress wasn’t separate from hormones.
• Identity wasn’t separate from choices.
• Environment wasn’t separate from health.

Everything influenced everything else.

Once I began seeing those connections, I couldn’t unsee them.

The systems thinker in me had discovered an entirely different kind of system:

the human being.

The Creation

And eventually the pieces began coming together.

• Not as another career.
• Not as another business.
• As an ecosystem.

YMR Holdings became the place where decades of seemingly unrelated experience could finally coexist.

• Business.
• Transformation.
• Wellness.
• Education.
• Creativity.
• Art.
• Food.
• Human behavior.
• Systems.
• Purpose.

And beneath them all, one fundamental question:

How do we help people create meaningful transformation that lasts?

That question eventually became the foundation for much of the work I am creating today.

The Evolution

I no longer believe mastery means having all the answers.

For me, mastery has increasingly meant:

• Recognizing connections.
• Understanding patterns.
• Remaining curious.
• Being willing to evolve.

And using what I’ve learned to help someone else see possibilities they couldn’t see before.

There are still chapters ahead of me.

• There are still things I want to build.
• People I want to help.
• Ideas I want to explore.
• And certainly many things I have yet to understand.

But for the first time, I can look backward and see the architecture.

• Every system.
• Every country.
• Every business.
• Every challenge.
• Every person.
• Every meal.
• Every painting.
• Every failure.
• Every reinvention.
• Every question.

Every chapter gave me another piece.

And perhaps that is one of the greatest things age and experience eventually give us:

The ability to recognize the meaning of a journey we could only understand by living it first.

Everything was training. And I’m beginning to understand what it was training me for.
